Windows 8 has drastically redesigned the boot menu to be not only more modern, but also much more user-friendly. I have to say they did a good job. All older versions of Windows used the basic DOS text interface to select options like Safe Mode or Advanced Startup Options.
Most people haven’t even bothered to look at something under Safe Mode because it’s pretty technical for the average user. Now when you hit the Windows 8 Start menu, you get a nice GUI that has a modern look to it. This is also called Windows RE (recovery environment) or the system recovery options.

You have three options: Load Windows normally ( Continue ), Troubleshoot or switch off the PC . There are far fewer ways to make the tool easier to use. I know a lot of people who had problems with Windows 7 but couldn’t figure out how to download Startup Repair or get into Safe Mode. In this article, I’m going to walk you through the steps and different methods to get into the Start menu.
It’s worth noting that the menu is pretty much the same for Windows 10, but it’s a slightly different method to get there. Check out my other post on starting Windows 10 in System Recovery Options.
Method 1 – SHIFT + restart
One way to start the Windows Recovery Environment Windows 8 is simply the SHIFT key to press, and then click New to click Start. What’s good about this method is that you can do it from within Windows, or you can do it even if no one is logged into the system.

So if you have problems with a Windows 8 computer or start from a secondary device and cannot log into the system, you can still restart in Windows RE by clicking at the top of the Start screen or at the bottom right if not logged in .
Method 2 – PC settings
The second option is to Windows 8 on the PC settings change . To do this, open the Charms bar and then click Settings .
Then click on Change PC settings in the settings bar at the bottom :

Click Update & Recovery at the bottom . If you’re using an older version of Windows 8, you may need to click General instead . Click on Recovery in the left menu and you will see the expanded startup area at the bottom. Click Restart Now and you’re good to go.
Method 3 – Automatic Drive or Recovery Drive
Lastly, if Windows 8 detects a boot problem with the system, it will automatically load Windows RE boot options. If your motherboard supports the new UEFI firmware, it will do so automatically. If not, you’d still have to press the F8 key, but you won’t have much time as Windows 8 loads so much faster.
It would be best to use Method 1 or 2 instead. However, if you can’t boot into Windows 8 at all, and the startup options aren’t automatically available, then you have to hope that you’ve created a Windows 8 USB recovery drive.A recovery drive in Windows 8 allows you to create a bootable USB flash drive that will contain the Windows RE environment loads if it doesn’t load automatically and you can’t get into Windows.

Note that you can also create the USB recovery drive from another Windows 8 computer and then use it on the drive that does not start properly. If you have any questions about recovery options, post a comment. Enjoy!
